The “suidooster” is the persistent, dry, and iconic wind that sweeps through Cape Town and reminds its residents of the unstoppable power. So, this is a fitting name for the annual Suidoosterfees which is a festival celebrating local culture and heritage through a platform of fun, colour, and a non-stop vibe. This year, things will be done differently due to the worldwide pandemic that is still with us.
The Suidoosterfees will this year be held in the form of a classic drive-in theatre held at our state of the art Atlantic Studios. This revival will be held from 4 to 15 November 2020, larger audiences can now watch the festivities on the silver screen from the comfort and safety of their own cars.
You may be thinking, How will this work? The artists will perform on an outdoor stage and their performance will be filmed live and in turn be projected on the silver screen for all of the attendees to watch. The theatregoers will tune into an FM radio frequency to listen to the soundtrack of the performances that are happening at that very moment within the safety of their vehicles. The event will of course be fully compliant with the requirements of the COVID-19 national health and safety regulations.
In the words of Professor Brian Figaji, chairman of the Suidoosterfees board, “Audiences are hungry for theater and music productions”. If you’re looking for a night out on the town, look no more. Get ready for an experience full of local performances such as dance, drama, comedy, and music. We look forward to welcoming you to our diverse studios based in Montague Gardens.
